Basic: Pleasing arrangement of the copy, usually in one color on a white background. These are typically informational signs, with a minimal amount of copy.

Intermediate: Two colors and possibly a panel, border or simple graphic. These deliver more appeal and advertising value.

Complex: Three or more colors with outlines or shadows, with panels, border or graphic, possibly on a painted background. The result is a sign with even more appeal and impact.
